Webquest: International Day of Peace

Hi, dear students! Welcome to our blog! Here you will find all the necessary instructions to complete today´s lesson successfully. Read them carefully and follow them step by step so you won´t get lost.

We´re going to make a brief trip into the past to understand important recent events in the world. So just forget everything and let yourself into this adventure watching this U2 video and answering the questions below (task 1):

1. Who is the main character in the video?
2. Why do you know this person?
3. This video shows a series of events. When were the first images taken?
4. What else does the video show?
5. Go to the minute 2:50 of the song. What date does it mention? What happened on this day?
5. What happens after this day watching the images that follow the third minute?
6. What is this song about?

Now let´s have a look at what led to these events in 1968. We´re going to use the information in Wikipedia to help us get a general idea of the situation at the time. Go to this article about the African-American Civil Rights Movement and read the entries 1 Background (characteristics) and 4.13 and 4.16. Write down the main ideas extracted from these pieces of information (task 2).

In this context, Martin Luther King makes his great speech "I have a dream". Watch from minute 3:10 onwards and note the ideas mentioned in his speech.

Recently, we have seen the first afro-american man become president of the United States, in some way we can see that Martin Luther King´s dream has been fulfilled. Let´s go back to Wikipedia and list in a chart the differences between these two afro-americans: birthplace and birthdate, ancestors, studies, political views and what they´ve both achieved (task 3).

Here are extracts of Barack Obama speeches which belong to his presidential campaign. What similarities and differences do you find between his words and Martin Luther King´s (task 4)?

You may also visit this website with an extract of Obama´s Inaugural Speech for further information.

To complete this activity, choose one of the characters we´ve learned about today and write a description of about 100 words. Talk about his appearance, what you think this person´s like and why he has raised so many people´s attention. You may search extra information in the web to help you write this essay (task 5). Deadline: Monday, 2nd of February.
